WinPhaD: Binary Phase Diagram and Thermodynamic Calculations

WinPhaD is a software program for calculating phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties in binary systems. Developed by CompuTherm LLC, WinPhaD combines a powerful calculation engine with a user-friendly Microsoft Windows-based graphical interface similar to popular programs such as Microsoft Word. Complex calculations are completed with only a few mouse clicks. The calculation engine never requires initial values-not even to find miscibility gaps! The resulting program is easy for the novice and effective for the expert. Anyone with a basic understanding of phase diagrams or thermodynamics can use WinPhad effortlessly.

WinPhaD is designed for engineers and scientists who use phase diagrams as a tool for materials research and development. WinPhaD can handle systems with solution phases, line compounds, and ordered intermetallic phases using the compound-energy formalism. Many types of calculations are supported, including temperature-composition phase diagrams, solidification simulations, spinodal lines, T0 curves, and thermodynamic properties. WinPhaD includes a database with more than 100 binary systems.

In addition to stable phase diagrams normally given in handbooks, the user can also calculate metastable phase diagrams and special features of a system, such as T0 lines and spinodals. All of the calculated results can also be merged onto one diagram simply by pushing a button. WinPhaD will never be obsolete because the database can be updated as new assessments and experimental data become available.

Users may calculate the thermodynamic properties of a chosen phase at a given temperature and composition. This information is not available in a traditional phase diagram handbook. WinPhaD can calculate thermodynamic properties at a given composition and temperature, such as the activity of a given element. With a single click, the path of solification of a given alloy can be calculated. Engineers doing materials and energy balance in processing design and development situations often need this data.

Since WinPhaD is a Windows-based software, any of the calculated phase diagrams or thermodynamic properties can be readily imported as figures in a report or manuscript being prepared by the user.

Compared to existing phase diagram calculation software, WinPhaD is user-friendly and robust. It calculates the stable phase diagrams automatically and can be directed to calculate any number of metastable phase diagrams for a specific system. In systems with miscibility gaps, WinPhaD automatically calculates the phase diagram including the miscibility gaps. Other programs require the user to first know such gaps exist in the system and then give specific instructions prior to calculating the phase diagrams.
